Active transportation support

Intent: 

To promote daily physical activity through the provision of complimentary on-site support for active commuting.

Separate and secure bike parking is synonymous with long-term bike parking, which can include indoor and outdoor secure storage areas accessible only to tenants, bicycle valets or bike lockers. In contrast, short-term bicycle parking is typically provided to visiting populations and includes infrastructure such as public bicycle racks.

Projects may provide shared bike parking facilities for regular building occupants and visitors. Regular building occupants must be provided with sufficient separate and secure parking and any additional parking to accommodate visitors may be provided through additional separate and secure parking spaces and/or short-term spaces.

As noted in the Core and Shell Scope Matrix, Part 1 and Part 2 of Feature 69 must be met within the extent of developer buildout with confirmed tenant support. In other words, Core and Shell projects pursuing Feature 69 must provide showers and lockers. Projects can provide these amenities within the scope of their buildout (using the expected building occupancy or the default occupancy assumptions) or provide tenants with a budget for providing these amenities if the developer will not provide showers and lockers for the entire building. Evidence of this fiscal allowance should be submitted during WELL documentation.

Core and Shell projects pursuing Feature 69 must provide showers and lockers. Projects can provide these amenities within the scope of their buildout (using the expected building occupancy or the default occupancy of 250 ft²/person [23 m²/person]) or provide tenants with a budget for providing these amenities if the developer will not provide showers and lockers for the entire building. Evidence of this fiscal allowance should be submitted during WELL documentation.

Photographic evidence would be sufficient. Photographs should be representative of different times of day, spanning multiple times of year (to account for seasonal use). Annotated design documents are also sufficient.

Bicycle storage facilities must accommodate the project population and any additional users who can access the bicycle facilities. On-site shared amenities restricted to building users must be in sufficient quantity to serve the entire building population at the rates described in the WELL feature. Off-site shared amenities must be in sufficient quantity to serve the all buildings within 200 m [656 ft] of the amenity. If the population is unknown, project teams may use default occupancy assumptions or may use their own rationale with an explanation in their documentation that supports the calculation.

This is measured by the distance a building occupant would walk from the building entrance to the storage location.

Peak visitors are usually determined by institutional knowledge or actual numbers. Project teams can use default occupancy assumptions to calculate the transient population of their space (found here). The project team can also use their own rationale to determine the peak visitation number, but should provide an explanation in their documentation that supports the calculation.

Yes, facilities located within 200m [656 ft] of the project boundary can be considered when determining compliance with this feature.
